My favourite style of portraiture for pets and particularly dog portraits is a natural one. Away from the constraints of a studio, the dogs are free to be themselves and have fun. If they’re having an enjoyable time, in a relaxed environment, it will bring out the best of their personality and allow us to produce the high quality pet portraits that you will treasure forever.
It is therefore essential that are very selective in our choice of location for our photo sessions. Sutton Park is one of the largest urban parks in the United Kingdom and is easily accessible to people travelling from Birmingham, the West Midlands, Staffordshire and other surrounding counties.
Ease of Access is only one reason why I think it’s the standout location for pet photography available in the region. I have listed my top 3 reasons below.
1. Creative Opportunities
If you’ve ever visited the park you will know that it is quite vast. Every time I go, I see an opportunity to try something different or a new angle to experiment with. Very often I will visit just to explore and challenge my creativity. The image below is a perfect example.
I like the way the light was falling onto the ground, with the leaves creating a lovely bokeh effect in the background, so I got down low to the ground and captured the photograph. A few weeks later, during a dog photography session, I drew on this knowledge to take this photograph of Chewy.
Keeping my eyes open and being alert to the opportunities that present themselves is something I am very mindful of and it means that this process of discovery keeps repeating so that I’m never short of creative ideas to produce attractive pet portraits.
2. Each Season Brings New Creative Possibilities
The changing of the seasons means that even the most familiar of location will look completely different in just a few short weeks or months. When I visited the park in late November I managed to capture this simple portrait of Woody, the Jack Russell Terrier, as the sun dropped down below the tree line.
Just six weeks earlier, in almost exactly the same spot, everything was still very green enabling us to produce a very different style Portrait of Pepa the Cockapoo.
The landscape is continuously changing and evolving which is why it is so exciting to me as somebody that produces a lot of dog portraits – the creative possibilities are endless.
3. The Dogs Love it!
For obvious reasons, it is mainly dogs that I photograph in Sutton Park and If there is one thing I’ve learned it is that the dogs have an absolute blast. With so much to explore and lots of different sights and smells they are in their element.
This is something that is extremely important to me because I want everybody to have a good time during one of our photo experiences. For that reason, putting the dogs at ease and ensuring they have as much fun as possible is my number one priority. The photographs take care of themselves after that.
